Elizabeth McCormack
is the current Coordinator of the Women's Centre. Elizabeth is a graduate of McGill University and the University of King's College, and is currently working on her Master's of Arts in International Development Studies in the area of conflict prevention. She has worked as a producer for CBC Television, a supervisor and writer for the Government of Canada, and a TA at Dalhousie University. Elizabeth is a spunky go-getter, committed to working on the Centre's Visibility Policy and strengthening the Centre's infrastructure and alliances on campus. She will also be responsible for day-to-day administration and client service, as well as program development.

Volunteer Application

The Dalhousie Women's Centre offers volunteer opportunities to those of all genders interested in serving the different capacities of the Centre. Volunteers help the Centre's staff with daily operations and administration of the Centre and/or work on woman-positive and community-building projects in the Dalhousie and Halifax community.

The DWC has given us all the chance to expand and strengthen our personal and professional horizons. We highly encourage others to explore the possibilities the Centre has to offer. Please note: all DWC volunteers must frst become Fembers. For an outline of our structure, please click here.

Volunteering With Us

There are many ways to volunteer with us, but broadly speaking, we have two volunteer categories:

Zone 1 Volunteers: Hold hours in the Centre, help out by answering phones, tidying up, running errands, postering, making posters/DWC literature, welcoming people, giving tours. If you have an hour or two to spare per week, please contact the Centre.

Zone 2 Volunteer Coordintors: The DWC is committed to developing volunteerism through leadership. Volunteers with training and experience work to gether with the Coordinator to oversee and run core Centre programming.

Core programms are called Portfolios; they are programs that are ongoing and are central to our functionning. Our current Portfolios include: Health Sexual Assault/Sexual Violence Students with Children Volunteer Management

Volunteering in our Broader Community

The DWC is able to link you with volunteer opportunities outside the Centre as well. Our partners include The Avalon Sexual Assault Centre, the Transition House Association of NS, AdSum House, Alice Housing, Stepping Stone, the Eating Disorders Action Group, SMU Women's Centre, CKDU, the DSU, the KSU, The Red Cross, Oxfam, Spencer House, Capital Health, HCAP, the Single Parent Resource Centre, the Doula Program, the Black Student Advising Centre, The Equity Office, NSPIRG, Dalhousie Black Students and the Law, the Nova Scotia Association of Midwives, DalOut, the Dalhousie Food Bank, the Midwifery Association of Nova Scotia, the Radical Cheerleaders, Gender and Women's Studies, Venus Envy, BLT, ARCH, Centre of Hope, DalAllies, the Nonviolent Communication Group, The King's Feminist Collective, CKDU, the Knitting Society, plus more.

Training

Volunteers are trained in the operations of the DWC, crisis intervention, anti-oppression work, client service, facilitation, leadership, and project organization. The DWC believes that our projects should be driven by the skills and passions of the people who volunteer with us and whom we serve. As such, we're committed to providing space, support, and/or funding to volunteer-led community-building projects.

Our core training includes:

Orientation for DWC members who wish to increase their knowledge/confidence about the Centre. Topics include: safe spaces, DWC policies and procedures, occupational health and safety, kitchen guidelines. Members how receive DWC 101 training are referred to asFembers. Prequisite: becoming a DWC member



DWC Level 1: This training provides an introductory foundation for volunteering with the Centre. Topics include: intro to feminist theory, DWC herstory and Consitution, orientation to DWC services and programs, peer counselling techniques, confidentiality, etc.

Please contact the Centre to sign up for your training session, as registration is necessary.

Please note: ALL volunteers require Level 1 training.

Level 2 training: Refers to all specialized training sessions such as Peer Counselling Sexual Assault, First Aid, Sexuality Sensitivity training, etc. While this training is open to all, we encourage Zone 1 volunteers to pursue their knowledge and development by attending these sessions when possible. Prerequisite: DWC Level 1 or DWC 101 or discretion of the Coordinator.
